Northwest CUD looks to build around steepest broadband barriers

It’s hardly two-months-old and already the 11-town organization looking to bridge Franklin and Grand Isle counties’ broadband gaps has a vision.

According to the Northwest Communications Union District (CUD)’s current chair, the CUD’s governing board has a long-term goal of laying down a “fiber highway” through the counties’ most rural corridors, leaving the actual Internet service to established providers.

A "practical" answer to the digital divide: Rep. Peter Welch hears from communications districts

ST. ALBANS CITY – The organizations formed to fill Vermont’s broadband gaps had a message for Rep. Peter Welch, D – Vt., Wednesday: broadband could come only with additional funds and a level playing field.
Vermont’s sole congressperson heard from representatives of several of Vermont’s nine communications union districts – or CUDs – during a virtual meeting Wednesday morning.
According to representatives from those CUDs, those organizations, formed by Vermont communities looking to collaborate on broadband access, were constrained by financial needs and the federal government’s preference for larger companies.

New broadband union could get more Vermonters connected to the internet

ENOSBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) - During the pandemic, many people rely on the internet for telemedicine, work or schools. But as many Vermonters know, connecting to the internet isn't easy in some parts of the state. Our Elissa Borden discovered that might change for parts of Franklin and Grand Isle counties.

Right now, studies show that 11% of homes in Enosburgh have poor connectivity, meaning they fall below the FCC standard of 25 to 30 megabits per second. But in a few years, that number may be as low as 3%.
With the newly formed Northwest Vermont Communications Union District, towns can borrow money or apply for grants and loans to install fiber network connections to areas in need. Residents in Enosburgh, Georgia, Fairfax and Montgomery may soon see a difference in their connections.
